LINDA LEE ALTER’S LIFE IN ART TO OPEN JUNE 8 IN ALLENTOWN

AVV 4-4 #734627

ALLENTOWN, PENN. — The Allentown Museum of Art will present the exhibition “Linda Lee Alter: A Life in Art,” on view June 8–September 7 in the Rodale Gallery.

Philadelphia artist Linda Lee Alter’s life has been devoted to an all-embracing creative exploration of the arts. Her work has ranged from vibrant fabric wall hangings and appliqués with lively allegorical depictions of fables and Old Testament stories, to paintings that serve as metaphors for life events. Many of her works, widely exhibited and collected, have served as inspiration for children’s book illustrations and greeting cards for family, friends and colleagues.

Alter’s enthusiasm and commitment to working in the arts has extended far beyond her own personal creative output. Much of her energy has been devoted to helping other women in the arts, and in the early 1980s she began collecting art by women with the intent of making women’s art more visible. In 1993, she established the Leeway Foundation to recognize and support individual woman artists in the Philadelphia region. Foundation grants have done much to encourage and promote many artists, especially marginalized artists who often work on a grassroots level to create social change through their art.

“Linda Lee Alter: A Life in Art” features about 45 works including Alter’s early fiber art, a number of paintings, three works in metal and several examples of commercial work, such as book illustrations and other designs.

The museum is at 31 North 5th Street. For information, www.allentownartmuseum.org or 610-432-4333.
