*Volunteer For Summer Reading: Young adults entering grade 6 and older in the fall can sign up to be a volunteer for the childrenâs summer reading program, which will run this year June 25 through August 16.
Training sessions will be offered for those who have not volunteered in the past on Wednesday, May 28, or Thursday, May 29, from 4 to 4:30 pm, in the childrenâs story hour room. If you were a volunteer last summer, you can pick up your registration form beginning May 28.
All forms are due back by June 6 to be eligible for this summerâs program. Any applications received after that date will be put on the sub list.Â
Adult Programs
*âHot or Not? Some Topics in Global Warming,â the libraryâs series about global warming and caring for the Earth, concludes this month with a free screening of Kilowatt Ours on Tuesday, May 27, at 7 pm.
*Willa Cather â An American Voice: Was Willa Cather a great American novelist, or was she old hat? A lesbian feminist or a pernicious right-winger? Why has Americaâs literary establishment never been able to decide despite eighty years of trying?
The Connecticut Humanities Council is sponsoring a series called Literature for Lifetime Reading and Discussion featuring American novelist Willa Cather. The series is focusing on Catherâs Prairie Trilogy, and Humanities Professor Julie Stern has been leading the discussions.
The fourth and final discussion will be âShort Storiesâ on Thursday, May 29, at 7:30 pm. Multiple copies of the books are available to borrow.
*Come Play Chess at the Library!
US Chess Federation Candidate Master Glenn Budzinski has started hosting chess games for all levels each Saturday at the library. Sets and boards will be provided each afternoon from 1 to 5 pm.
There are no fees or registration. Just come and play.
*Book Sale Is Back: The Friends of the Library Annual Book Sale will return in July with more than 120,000 items in over 80 categories.
