Eight members of the Newtown Womanâs Club, GFWC, Inc attended the 109th annual convention of the General Federation of Womenâs Clubs of Connecticut, held May 5 and 6 at Glastonbury Hilton Garden Inn, Glastonbury.
Peg Forbell, NWC president and state arts and crafts chairperson, Joann Bruno, Marion Thompson, Betty Warner, Evelyn Spera, Marcia Cavanaugh, Mary Elander and Barbara Krausz were pleased to be part of the convention at which a check in the amount of $35,000 was presented to Dr Linda Schwartz, State of Connecticut commissioner of Veteransâ Affairs by the GFWC/CT.
The check from the GRWC/CT administration was the culmination of a two-year state project called Adopt-A-Wing, which raised funds to underwrite the expense of refurbishing a wing in the domicile building of the Connecticut State Veterans Hospital in Rocky Hill.
Mary Preisner of the Federated Womanâs Club of Glastonbury was the chairperson for the project. The Newtown Womanâs Club, GRWC, Inc is part of the GFWC of Connecticut and contributed $1,500 to the Adopt-A-Wing project.
In addition to the money for the Adopt-A-Wing project, members of GFWC/CT donated socks and underwear for the veterans. Approximately five foot lockers were filled with new articles and delivered to the Rocky Hill facility. An additional trunk of items was given to the West Haven VA facility.
The Newtown Womanâs Club, GFWC, Inc provides gifts for veterans in December and valentines in February.
