Dedication Or Foolishness

To the Editor:

I believe that the level of dedication to sports in Newtown is at the expense of the safety of the children who participate in the sports.

On Sunday both my children were expected by their teams to be on fields at 5 pm when thunder had been rumbling in the distance for a while and lightening had been spotted. During my son’s baseball game parents reported seeing lightening, but the response of the officials running the game was, “They hadn’t seen it, so they would continue until they saw it themselves.”

In the case of my daughter’s soccer scrimmage, I refused to let her play as lightening continued and she and I stayed in my car in hopes the storm would pass.  I was horrified to see these girls and their parents on the field.
