For the second day in a row, Mother Nature is playing games with tournament competition. A trio of South-West Conference schools — Masuk of Monroe, New Milford, and Pomperaug of Southbury — were closed on Wednesday, May 28, as a result of power outages caused by strong winds the night before, Newtown High School Athletic Director Gregg Simon said.

This impacts Newtown High School’s boys’ lacrosse and track and field teams, as well as the tennis squads. Because three participating schools in the South-West Conference track and field championships are not in session, the meet was bumped to Thursday, May 29. Originally slated to take place on Tuesday, May 27, the competition was put on hold because of a threat of severe thunderstorms. As planned, the event will take place at Stratford’s Bunnell High School. The new start time is 3:30 pm on Thursday, May 29. The SWC individual tennis championships were also moved to May 29, with a noon start time.

Newtown’s boys’ lacrosse team was slated to take on New Milford in the SWC tournament semifinal round and had its game put on hold twice because of the weather. The game was to have been played at New Fairfield High School but has been switched to 5 pm at Newtown High on Thursday, May 29. That was the original date for the championship round. The championship game site and time, as of late Wednesday morning, is to be determined.

Newtown’s girls’ lacrosse team, as planned since Tuesday’s postponement, will host New Fairfield in the SWC semifinals on Wednesday, May 28 (5 pm at Blue & Gold Stadium). The winner advances to the championship game, still set for 5 pm at Pomperaug High.

The Newtown softball team, which saw its quarterfinal-round visit to Pomperaug postponed on May 24 because of wet field conditions from the previous day’s rain, played two afternoons later, on Memorial Day. The Hawks then had their semifinal clash with Lauralton Hall of Milford postponed on May 27 due to the threat of thunderstorms. The softball team is still expected to play Lauralton at 7 pm on Wednesday, May 28. The game will be played at Stratford’s DeLuca Field with the first pitch at 7 pm. The winner will play in the Thursday, May 29, title game, also at DeLuca Field (7 pm).
