Two Police Officers Honored For DUI Enforcement
NEW BRITAIN — Two Newtown police officers have been named as award recipients by Mothers Against Drunk Driving/Connecticut (MADD) for their DUI enforcement work.
Patrol Sergeant Matthew Wood and Patrol Officer Felicia Figol, who is the police department’s dog handler, were named as award recipients at MADD’s 29th Annual Law Enforcement Recognition Ceremony, which was held on May 20 at Central Connecticut State University.
MADD is a nonprofit organization that works to end drunk driving, fight drugged driving, support the victims of those crimes, and to prevent underage drinking.
Both Sgt Wood and Ofc Figol have received MADD awards in the past for their DUI enforcement, according to police Lieutenant Christopher Vanghele.
Both police officers have led the Newtown Police Department in terms of the number of DUI arrests which they have made, Lt Vanghele said.
Sgt Wood is an instructor in the area of drugged driving training and enforcement. He is trained as a “drug recognition expert.”
During 2014, Sgt Wood provided such training to police officers across the state, according to Lt Vanghele. He also trained members of the town police department in Advanced Roadside Impaired Driving Enforcement (ARIDE).
“The Newtown Police Department is extremely proud of these two officers for being leaders in this area and for their continued commitment to safety of the motoring public and the citizens of Newtown,” Lt Vanghele said in a statement.
