 Senior services for Newtown seniors are available at the Multipurpose Building on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook. The Senior Center is under the auspices of the Commission on Aging. The center is run by Senior Services Director Marilyn Place. For more information about programs offered at the Senior Center call 270-4310.

You may drop in at the Senior Center weekdays between 9 am and 4 pm. A hot meal is served at noon for which you must reserve three days in advance.

Newtown has daily door-to-door minibus service Monday through Friday. Buses also run all day from the Senior Center to Sand Hill Plaza. On Fridays, the bus alternates between rides to Danbury Fair Mall and Berkshire Plaza in Danbury (to Walmart Route 6). Cost is 65¢ each way for the Sand Hill Plaza trip, 75¢ each way for out of town. Call 748-2511 TWO DAYS IN ADVANCE to book a ride and get the out-of-town Friday schedule.

 

This Week’s Programs

*BREWIN’ UP FUN IN HARTFORD — Visit the elaborate Victorian Mark Twain House on Thursday, June 4, then lunch at the Chowder Pot, and the last stop will be the Thomas Hooker Brewery, with a tour of how ales and lagers are brewed and samples at the tasting bar. Depart at 8:15 am; cost is $76.

*GOOD NEWS BIBLE STUDY GROUP will meet at the center on Fridays at 1 pm. This week’s study is about “Bibles laid open. Millions of surprises.” George Herbert, 17th Century.

*Newtown Senior Center membership DUES are $12 for the year and are due no later than June 26.

Upcoming Programs

*AARP DRIVER SAFETY refresher program will be Thursday and Friday, June 18 and 19, from 12:30 to 4:30 pm. You must attend both classes. Space is limited; call to reserve a spot.

*Seniors age 70+ are invited to participate in a JURIED ARTS SHOW at Pomperaug Woods, Southbury, Friday to Sunday, September 25–27. Categories include painting, drawing, sculpture, and photography. Submit photographs of three pieces by Friday, June 5. Pick up entry forms and more information at the Newtown Senior Center.

 

Day Trips

*Ace In The Hole Productions presents MY LONG LOST BROTHER ELVIS at the Brownstone on Thursday, June 11. Enjoy a full luncheon menu and great music and a bushel of laughs with Tommy Walker’s Elvis. Depart at 8:30 am; cost is $86.

*Enjoy lunch at the GRISWOLD INN, then step aboard the ESSEX STEAM TRAIN, and then a RIVERBOAT RIDE up the Connecticut River on Tuesday, June 30. Depart at 9:45; cost is $76.

*On Thursday, July 9, depart for Boston and lunch at Vinny T’s. After lunch cruise around the harbor and past the TALL SHIPS docked. After the cruise, browse around QUINCY MARKET. Depart 7 am; cost is $116.

*The BOSTON POPS with JAMES TAYLOR at Tanglewood in Lee, Mass., on Sunday, August 30. Enjoy a luncheon at the Cork N’ Hearth complete with all the fixings. Reserve seats for the Boston Pops. Only a few tickets left. Depart 9 am; cost is $110.

 

Recurring Activities

*Patty the hairdresser will be at the center once a month.

*YOGA classes are Monday and Thursday at 10:30 am.

*Billiards room; poker/card room; ping pong; and Wii bowling, golf, tennis, and baseball.

*Wii BOWLING, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday afternoons.

*MAKE CARDS FOR OUR TROOPS every Tuesday from 10 am to noon and 1 to 3 pm.

*BEGINNERS BRIDGE LESSONS on Wednesday, 9:30 am, with Mary Matern.

*BOARD GAME DAY is every Thursday at 1 pm. Coffee or tea and snack will be supplied.

*MOVIE DAY on Tuesdays and Fridays at 2 pm. Enjoy a good “favorite” movie with a friend.

Monday: AM cards, hatha yoga, exercise, PM chorus group, weaving, exercise.

Tuesday: AM cards for troops, line dancing; PM Tai Chi, movie.

Wednesday: AM bridge, exercise; PM exercise.

Thursday: AM hatha yoga, cards; PM mah jongg, Scrabble, Wii bowling.

Friday: AM mah jongg, Quilts of Valor, PM Bible study group, knitting, movie.

 

Menu For Week Of  June 1–5

Monday: Garlic parmesan crusted cod fillet, tartar sauce, brown rice pilaf, corn and peas, dinner roll, diet fruited Jell-O with whipped topping.

Tuesday: Spinach and chicken soup with crackers, cold cut grinder with ham, bologna, and cheese on grinder roll with lettuce and mayonnaise and mustard, pickle chips, fresh melon.

Wednesday: Dave’s meatloaf with gravy, mashed potato, broccoli cuts, oat bread, pineapple juice, mandarin orange sections.

Thursday: Hot open turkey sandwich on wheat with gravy, cranberry sauce, sweet potato cuts, green beans, chocolate chip cookie.

And for planning ahead—

Monday: June 8: Apricot glazed chicken quarter, rice pilaf, California blend vegetables, wheat bread, vanilla pudding with strawberries and whipped topping.

Tuesday: June 9: Fish with lemon dill sauce or roast beef sandwich on rye with mayonnaise, rosemary roasted potato, jardiniere vegetables, seedless rye bread, grape juice, coffee cake.
