Results from the Newtown Soccer Club Kickoff Memorial Day Tournament are as follows:
U11
Monroe 4, Newtown Comets 2: Brenna Kelly and Mikayla Kuligowski scored a goal apiece and Kelly added an assist. Casey Harkins provided shots on goal and Emily Charash and Katie Mossbarger shared the keeper duties. Veronica Moyer played well on defense.
Fairfield 2, Comets 1: Brenna Kelly scored the lone goal off a nicely-executed assist by Quinn Karp. Emily Charash braved the nets for the duration while Victoria Kirkman and Madeline Sieber gave solid support in the back.
Ridgefield (black) 1, Comets 0: Alana Murray and Alyssa Ruefenacht fought hard in the midfield and Portia Baudisch was tireless at striker. Julia Schoeni and Sarah Lyon worked hard on defense.
Comets 6 Ridgefield (orange) 0: Haley Trudell (midfield) and Christina DeBartolomeo (defense) both shined in the Cometsâ first win, while the scoring was shared by three different players with two goals apiece: Casey Harkins, Alana Murray and Veronica Moyer. Quinn Karp provided two assists and two more came from Kimberly Brello and Brittney Antous. Emily Charash and Alyssa Ruefenacht shared the keeper duties.
U14
The U14 Girls Flash took 3rd in the 27th Annual Kick Off Tournament held in Newtown. The girls walked away with a 1-1-1 record with a 1-0 victory over Danbury, a loss against Fusion 0-1 and a tie of 1-1 against New Fairfield. Severe storms forced a cancelled game against Watertown. Assertive play produced an assist from Zoe Eggleson to Julia Trudell to score. A long kick from Bianca Solano resulted in the second Flash goal of the tournament. Tiredless defensive efforts by Kelly Brooks and others kept the goals against Flash to only two.
Boys U12
Newtown White Lightning 1, Monroe 0: Jeremy Doski netted the score off a great pass from Daniel Hamula. Ryan King and Michael Cook controlled the midfield. Peter Manfredonia had the shutout in goal.
Wilton 1, Newtown 0: Sawyer Conrad played a great game at forward and the defense was led by Kevin Droniak and Knute Johnson. Midfielder Nathyn Horvath passed the ball well.
Stamford 3, Newtown 2: Patrick Rowley and Daniel Hamula scored. Will Swain played well on defense. Carter Nordman and Raymond Xue controlled the offense.
Ridgefield 5, Newtown 2: Kevin Droniak and Patrick Rowley scored the goals. Jeremy Doski controlled the midfield. Michael Cook and Michael Biancardi moved to fullback and anchored the defensive effort.
U14
The Cobras stepped up and performed well the annual Newtown Soccer Club Memorial Day Tournament with a combined record of 2-1-1. In the first game, the Cobras edged Southbury 2-1 on a goal off a Patrick Riccardi header set up by a Stephen Conway corner kick. Tyler Ruefenacht netted the first goal of the contest.
The Cobras dominated Fairfield in the second match 7-0. Matt Rahtelli, Stephen Conway, Kieran Lardner, Francis Saraceni and Robert Willis all scored and Mergim Bajraliu had two goals.
Game three featured a hard fought contest against Premier team Carmel, NY ending in a 3-0 defeat to the eventual tournament champion.
The Cobras rebounded in the final match, coming from behind to tie Watertown 2-2. Mergim Bajraliu added his third score of the tournament off a nice assist from Tyler Ruefenacht, while Stephen Conway tied it up in the final minutes on a cross that powered its way into the net.
Throughout the matches, keeper Sean Elliott led a defense buoyed by Sam Langdon, Alec Lockhart, Yoshi Kohrman-Glaser, Colin Moller and Noah Sock. Ian Solaski, Pieter Martino, Nick Gerbo and Devin DiNicola contributed fine performances throughout the tournament.
