Tennis Teams Finish Off Regular Slate, Begin Postseason Play
Newtown High School’s tennis teams wrapped up the regular season and began postseason play with South-West Conference Tournament action in late May.
The boys finished the year 10-1, second place behind Weston. Results of the last two matches:
Newtown defeated Masuk of Monroe 6-1 on May 15.

The SWC championship was held last week May 21 and 23 at Wolfe Park in Monroe. Every position qualified.
Singh retired in the first match with injury. Frankie Cannizzo won at second singles. Shetty advanced to the finals and then retired with an injury. Paulsen lost in straight sets in the final to Weston. Anderson and Conlin lost in the semis to Barlow. Eppers and Hislop lost in the finals to Weston. Third double lost in the semis to eventual champs Weston.
The Nighthawks finished second to Weston for the third straight year. The first round of the state tournament is Friday, May 30. Newtown will battle not only tough competition but also injuries.
The Nighthawk girls lost 4-3 at Masuk on May 16. Nighthawk winners were No. 2 Sophia Dutsar 6-2, 6-4, No. 4 Eren Weiss 7-6 (12-10), 6-4, and the doubles team of Sydney Bruno and Ella Romano, 6-2, 6-7, 7-5.
Newtown defeated New Milford 6-1 on May 19 then moved on to the SWC tourney at Joel Barlow in Redding; results of those matches were not available. The girls' tourney continues in late May.
