Rev Mark Emmet Grimes

Served At St Rose

The Reverend Mark Emmet Grimes, 70, died May 24 at Danbury Hospital. Born February 11, 1938, in New Haven, he was the son of William T. and Florence I. Lynch Grimes.

Rev Grimes was a priest for 44 years with the Diocese of Bridgeport. He was assigned to St Rose of Lima in Newtown; St Aloysius in New Canaan; St Patrick’s in Bridgeport; St Peter’s in Danbury; St Maurice in Stamford; St Edward’s in New Fairfield; St Jerome’s pastor in Norwalk; and most recently, at Sacred Heart in Georgetown.

He attended St Thomas Seminary in Bloomfield for two years, then attended and graduated with a bachelor’s degree from Holy Angels Seminary in Buffalo, N.Y., in 1964. Rev Grimes was then ordained on May 16, 1964. He continued on to NYU and received his master’s degree in psychological counseling and then a Doctorate of Ministry from the Jesuit School of Theology in Berkeley, Calif.

He is survived by his sisters, Lois and her husband, Robert Hall, of South Windsor; and Margaret A. Grimes of Naugatuck; a nephew, William Hall; a niece, Karen Arendt and her husband, Harry, and their two children, Robert and Elena; and a niece, Deborah Anderson and her three children, Scott, Jeffrey, and Brian.

A Vigil Mass was held at Church of St Cecilia, Stamford, May 28, celebrated by Msgr Albert Watts. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated May 29 at Church of St Cecilia with the Most Rev William E. Lori, Bishop of Bridgeport, celebrating. Interment followed at St John’s Cemetery in Darien.

The family requests that memorial donations are made to Church of St Cecilia, 1184 Newfield Avenue, Stamford CT 06905.
