Softball Team Beats Glastonbury In State Tourney Opener

UPDATE: The second-round game at Amity will take place at 4 pm on Wednesday, June 4.

Newtown High School's softball team, the No. 14 seed in the Class LL State Tournament, defeated No. 19 and visiting Glastonbury 9-4 in first-round action on June 2.

The Nighthawks scored a trio of runs in three innings. They jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning, broke a 3-3 tie with a three-run fifth, and tacked on in the sixth.

Maddie Thoesen had a two-run single through the right side of the infield in the opening frame. Thoesen doubled off the center field wall and courtesy runner B.B. Diorio stole third and scored on Sophia Caruso's ground out for a 4-3 lead in the fifth. After Gillian Boughan walked and Elena Burdo singled Izzy Liguori knocked in two runs with a hit of her own, making it 6-3 heading to the sixth inning.

Glastonbury scored in the top of the sixth but Reagan Schenzer drove in a run on a bunt single, Thoesen hit a sacrifice fly, and Gabby Ansman hit a single to left to drive in the ninth run.

The Nighthawks will visit No. 3 Amity of Woodbridge in the second round on Wednesday, June 4; first pitch is at 4 pm.
