With a couple of blistering pitching performances, the Newtown Middle School softball team registered a pair of shutout wins recently … 14-0 over Memorial of Middlebury and 4-0 over Ansonia.

Against Memorial, Kate Bowen fired a one-hitter and recorded 16 strikeouts, fanning five of the last six batters she faced in the game. Megan Casey sparkled in the field, making a tough catch in the top of the seventh.

Bowen helped herself at the plate, rapping a pair of doubles while Ally Modzelewski singled and tripled. Sarah Ferris, Kait Marsden, Casey and Ashley Kuligowski all singled twice to fuel an 18-hit attack. Rachel Ruiz doubled.

Against Ansonia, Bowen combined with Kuligowski in the circle to whiff 13 batters. Modzelewski, Marsden, Nicki Elias and Ruiz all made strong plays in the field with Ruiz going 3-for-3 at the plate with a pair of singles and a double. Bowen, Modzelewski and Natalie Dunn all doubled.
