KILLINGLY — The public is invited to join students of EastConn’s Quinebaug Middle College (QMC) magnet high school on Saturday, June 14, when they host a 5K run and quarter-mile Kids Fun Run.

The event, called “Run to Remember: Sandy Hook Hi 5K,” will benefit Sandy Hook Promise. It will be presented at Owen Bell Park, 580 Hartford Pike in the Dayville section of Killingly.

Organized by QMC high school students as a public service project, “Run to Remember: Sandy Hook Hi 5K” participants will be invited to walk or run along the Owen Bell Park cross country course used by Killingly High School track students.

The race is being directed by The First Mile, a race management company.

Cost is $25 if registered in advance, or $30 the morning of the races, which will begin at 8:30.

“Our QMC students are go-getters!” said QMC Principal Gino LoRicco of the QMC middle-college high school students who helped organize the 5K benefit.

 “They are looking for ways to make this world a better place and they make it their duty to look for important work that will positively impact others,” he said.

QMC senior Maya Tetreault, one of the student organizers, credited QMC teacher Suzette LeFevre for inspiring QMC students to hold the 5K benefit for Sandy Hook Promise.

“It was [LeFevre’s] determination to bring this to the community and … celebrate lives, that helped us see the passion,” said Tetreault, who added, “If everyone can do a little to benefit our community, the world can change.”
