Stream Survey Volunteers Needed

WESTON — The Nature Conservancy is seeking volunteers to study and help others better understand the environmental conditions of the Saugatuck River.

Volunteers will be trained by staff from the Natural Resources Conservation Service (part of the US Department of Agriculture) to collect information on the existing physical conditions of the streams within the Saugatuck River watershed. The data collected will help local municipalities identify conservation and resource protection strategies and will help direct The Nature Conservancy’s work in these communities.

Anyone interested in learning more about the natural resources in Fairfield County is invited to train as a streamwalk volunteer. Training will be held at Weston Public Library, 56 Norfield Road (telephone 203-222-2665), on Saturday, June 19, from 8:30 am until noon. Pre-registration is required.

During the months of July and August, volunteers will work in teams, some by boat, to gather resource information on an assigned 2-3-mile stream segment.

For more information or to register for the training, call Sally Harold, conservation manager at The Nature Conservancy’s Devil’s Den Preserve, 203-226-4991 extension 207.
