SIMSBURY 3, ROCKETS 2 (STATE CUP): The Rockets were focused, rested and determined to give Simsbury a difficult run for the slot in the State Finals. Simsbury was ready to defend their State Champion title. It was an exciting first half, with the action equally distributed on the field. Simsbury was able to break through Newtownâs defense to score early, but Newtown answered almost immediately when Siobhan Cooper found the net off of a cross by Alex Konneker. Erin Clark, Megan Rawson and Emily Fields kept Simsbury away from the goal for the remainder of the half. Tara Gaston defended the goal terrifically for the game. With a tie score going into the second half, Newtown was pumped, and set their sites on a win. Alex Konneker scored on a breakaway and Newtown tasted victory with the lead. Simsbury quickly took advantage of the euphoria and shocked Newtown with a goal to tie it up again. Rattled by the surprise, Newtown was not able to move the ball downfield. Simsbury scored again to take the lead. With not much time left, Newtown just couldnât get their focus and momentum back. It was a hard fought loss for the Rockets. They definitely earned the reputation of being a team to give the defending State Champions a tough fight.
ROCKETS 4, NEW HARTFORD 0: The Rockets dominated play throughout the game. New Hartford could not manage to get by the defense powered by Casey Frobey, Emily Fields and Megan Rawson. Early in the game, Mary Anders scored the Rocketsâ first goal inside near post. Siobhan Cooper followed with a second goal in the back of the net on a cross by Anders. Alex Konneker had a great game on the right wing. Caitlin Hansen started off the second half scoring with a low ball to the corner of the goal. Kayla Mesko and Mary Grace Ober energized the midfield. Cooper clinched the shut out with another goal. The Rockets ended the season with only one loss in league play.

AFTERSHOCK, 2, SOUTHBURY, 0: The Aftershock registered a convincing 2-to-0 victory over Southbury at Fairfield Hills on June 11. Conor Martin opened up the scoring 25 minutes into the first period when he booted in a pass from his twin Brendan. Then, midway through the second period, Collin Babbage added the clincher by driving the ball home from the left side of the net after Jim Gastonâs deep kick, from the right side, bounded off the Southbury goalieâs hands. Collin came close to scoring on two other occasions as well: on one of them, early in the game, his line drive kick from the center bounced off the bottom of the cross-post. Jim Gaston and Sammy Morrison also had near-misses as the Aftershock threatened repeatedly. On the defensive side, Dave Wilkins sparkled by twice kicking the ball away from an open net, preventing Southbury from tying, and keeper Adam Margulies made a pair of spectacular saves. In all, both the offense and the defense turned in their best-coordinated efforts of the year: Aftershock attackers consistently passed and dribbled their way around Southbury defenders, while the defense produced repeated steals and blocks.

NAVIGATORS 2, BROOKFIELD 0: The Navigators concluded a successful spring season with a four-game winning streak. The âGators on the board midway through the second half in a 2-0 win over Brookfield when the defense created a turnover at midfield, quickly moved the ball to Julie Landin, who made a perfect pass to Dana Schunter for a one-timer past the goalie. Harriet Morgan used her speed, foot skills and strong shot for the teamâs second goal. Rachel Maley, Katie Kirrange and Ashley Brain powered the offense while Alana Bilangi, Claire Obert and Caroline Kraich kept pressure on the Brookfield offense, Christie Attansio and Jaclyn Petresanta had strong defensive games in front of goaltender Bethany Morin.

STARS 3, NIGHTMARES 1: The Nightmares had lived up to their namesake, and proven strangely difficult for the Stars. After a full half of dominating mid-field on the play of Kristen DeCesare and Jessica Paynter, with the ball pinned largely near the Nightmare net by aggressive forward defense from Becky Huot and Alicia Rogers, only Elizabeth (Biz) Bowen and Bethany Ober had evaded Alyssa Scaloreâs goaltending â which included a penalty shot save â to score for the Stars. Still, with air-tight goaltending from Katie Mayer, it seemed like a 2-0 halftime lead would do well enough⦠only nobody told that to the Nightmares. Like angry hornets on the hottest day of summer they came booming from intermission to play as a team possessed. With every blocked Star shot Caitlin Sullivan and Laura Reid leapt to the attack, with each frustrated charge the Nightmares mounted another â until, finally, it took its toll on the scoreboard. Laura Reid fired one home while Lisa Alberico, Alexandra Doniger, and Ellen Reid gummed the Star offense to a grinding halt. Kate Sullivan threatened again with a brilliantly executed corner, but the resultant shot screamed a foot wide of the net. There, however, the Nightmare press had shot its bolt. The heat took its toll in a hard played hour of soccer, Biz Bowen got loose with a ball to ice the outcome, and scoring ended for the Stars final game . . . necessitating a trip to the ice cream parlor.

DOGNABBERS: The Dognabbers won the Boysâ E Division championship in a six-man shootout over the Tigersharks. The Dognabbers finished 16-0 on the season after the 1-0 double-overtime, shootout win over the âSharks.
The âNabbers reached the finals with victories in the first three rounds of the double-elimination tournament. Mickey Fay scored the lone goal with six minutes left in Game 1 and Danny Quinn stopped 12 shots. In Game 2, Matt Boland scored three goals and Fay added two while Michael Iorfino played well at sweeper. In Game 3, Connor McManus scored from the left side with two defenders all over him and then Boland scored off a feed from Ron Martens. Quinn recorded his third shutout.
In Game 1 of the championship final (the Tigersharks already had one loss, and thus had to beat the âNabbers twice) the âSharks recorded a 3-2 win. Boland and Michael Kearns scored for the âNabbgers. Fay hit the pipe with a shot in the final minute and Charlie Lobusco was strong as sweeper.
In Game 2 of the championship final, the âNabbers and âSharks dueled to a 0-0 tie and in the shootout, Ryan Boucher stopped all six shots while Tucker LaPak won the game â and the title â with a low, curving shot to the right.
Â
TIGERSHARKS: Even though the mighty Tigersharks (14 - 2) lost the championship final round to the undefeated Dognabbers (16 - 0), by a score of 1 - 0 in a sudden death, double over-time shoot out, it shouldnât overshadow the effort of every player.
The Tigersharks started the tournament on Friday evening with a 1-0 victory over the Thunderbirds. Greg Hill scored the lone goal to advance the team. On Saturday morning, the âSharks battled a tough Flash team to a 1-1 draw at the end of regulation; and then losing 2 - 1 in a sudden death double-overtime shoot out.
The loss sent the Tigersharks back to the B-Flight in the double-elimination tournament. Their next game, ironically, was a re-match with the Flash. This time, however, the T-Shark shooters came alive with goals from Anthony Florez, Greg Hill, Blake Barreto, Bobby Davenport and Jason Hanna to defeat the Flash, 5-0.
In the semi-final match, the âSharks got past the Wolfpack, 3 â 0, on goals by Florez, Barreto, and Brandon McGuinn and stellar play by Billy Simms and Stephen Sapienza as they out shot the âPack 22-1.
The Tigersharks had to beat the Dognabbers twice to win the division title and got the first victory, 3-2, on goals from Evan Gregoire, Florez and Barreto. Ben Wicki, the âShark goaltender, was superb, making six saves â including one on a penalty kick that would have tied the game.
The T-Sharks lost the next game, however, in the shootout and the âNabbers were the champions.
FLASH 3, WOLFPACK 2: The attacking Flash, with Stephen Dworkin playing well on defense, were stymied by the Wolfpack defense anchored by Danny Lawrence and Cody Cullens, resulting in a tie. In the shootout, Thaddeus Adams scored first for the Flash. Andrew Pezzulo added a second. Henry Sims and Michael Hahn answered goal-for-goal for the Wolfpack. On the final shot, Matthew Yakush drilled one into the corner of the goal to lift the Flash to the win.

In the sudden death round, Tyler Adams of the Flash arced one in to win for the Flash.
FLASH 6, TEAM #6 1: Matthew Brede scored first for the Flash. In the second half, Kurt Nacewicz scored twice, Andrew Rothenberg scored with the goalie screened, Matthew Yakush added one, and Eric MacKnight put one in off two defenders.  Ben Cruson and Tyler Adams played well on defense.
