The Newtown Winterset Ski Club recently presented awards to some of its members at their Pizza Night, one the club’s many annual social events held during the ski season.

Awards were presented to members who participated in the CT Ski Council-sponsored weekly races at Mt. Southington as well as racers and winners of events during the Okemo On-Snow Carnival Weekend in March.

Some of the recipients of awards were Patrick Keough and Ashley Soucar who took second place for Juniors under 10 years old.

The club Volleyball team, a competition played entirely while wearing alpine ski boots, took third place. Members of that team were Nicki O’Toole, Gary, Chris and Nancy Chucta, Ross and Clay Brier, Tom Morrissey, Paul Leuzzi and Rob Weizel.

Phil & Kristin Hynes took 3rd place in the Chucta Family and the O’Toole family. Chris and Avery Chucta finished first and second in the Junior A Division; Andy Lapati led in the Club race and Nan-Jane Keough finished in the top ten of the Womens’ race while Charles Perry led in the Team race.

Winners of the CT Ski Council’s Monday night races were: Heather Kilgore, first place in the women’s division (43-49); and Tony Anufrijevas, second place in the Men’s Vet (69+).

Seventeen Winterset members raced during the 8-night series. The following received awards: Mike O’Toole, Ham Brosius, Ann Krane, Charles Perry, Mark Marquez and the Cebry’s family. Angie Taylor was recognized for being a top 10 finisher in the Mountain Dew Challenge Race at Loon Mt. in New Hampshire.

Winterset Ski Club is a non-profit organization, subsidizing its trips and lessons as much as possible in order to keep the exhilarating sports of skiing and boarding affordable to everyone. The club was founded in 1970 as a close-knit Newtown family club. It currently serves all of Fairfield County with a membership of more than 400, consisting of singles as well as families, toddlers to senior citizens, with skill levels ranging from expert to brand new beginner.

The typical Sunday bus trip (8-10 per winter) gets club members to mountains such as Okemo, Magic Mountain, Bromley, Stratton and Jiminy Peak early, safely, in comfort and in good company. And, after a great day of skiing, the bus provides a pleasant, relaxing trip home, with a movie, where members enjoy snacks and drinks rather than driving.

Winterset also sponsors weekend and week-long trips, racing events and clinics, yearly activities such as a fall picnic, a Kick-off Raffle Night, Christmas Party, Potluck Dinner, and annual dinner dance. More important, it offers the companionship of kindred spirits.

If you would like to receive a registration form in September or more information about the club, email Mike O’Toole, Membership Chairman at otoolem@prodigy.net.
