On Sunday, June 29, Edmond Town Hall Theatre will host screenings of two Hollywood classics. The event will be part of the 2014 Sunday Cinema Series celebrating the 75th anniversary of “The Greatest Year in Film — 1939,” presented by Newtown Cultural Arts Commission.

“This month, we’ll reintroduce the ‘double feature,’ common to the era, with just a brief break between films,” said Jen Rogers, coordinator of the film series. “Experience Hollywood classics the way they were meant to be seen: in the theater.”

The schedule for June 29 will be: 1 pm, Laurel & Hardy’s Flying Deuces; 4 pm, Ninotchka starring Greta Garbo; and 7 pm, a double feature of Ninotchka and Flying Deuces.

Admission for the first two screenings is $2, and $4 for the double feature.

Ninotchka, says Ms Rogers, is “a charming romantic comedy starring the incomparable Greta Garbo in her first American comedy.” Garbo is captivating as a cold, all-business Russian envoy who melts under the warmth of a Parisian love affair.

The film received four Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, Best Actress, Best Original Story and Best Screenplay.

Ninotchka is sponsored by Avancé Esthétiques European Day Spa in Newtown.

Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy’s The Flying Deuces tells the ridiculous story about how the lads join the Foreign Legion in hopes that Oliver will soon forget his broken heart. With non-stop slapstick humor, a little song and dance, and an absurd ending, Laurel & Hardy’s humor is fit for young and not-so-young alike.

The Flying Deuces is sponsored by Two Loons Jewelry, a Newtown-based company owned by two sisters who hand make chic pendants and accessories from up-cycled vintage game pieces.

Edmond Town Hall is at 45 Main Street. For additional information about this and other programs being planned in the Sunday Cinema Series, visit Facebook.com/NewtownSundayCinemaSeries or NewtownArtsCommission.org.

Newtown Cultural Arts Commission will reintroduce the double feature with this month’s offering in its Sunday Cinema Series. Moviegoers will have the opportunity to take in a pair of classic comedies — The Flying Deuces and Ninotchka — on Sunday, June 29, at Edmond Town Hall.
