KATHARINA RICH PERLOW GALLERY PRESENTS ‘FIGURATIVE’ TO JULY 6

avv/gs set 6-14 #703252

NEW YORK CITY — The group show “Figurative” is on view through July 6 at Katharina Rich Perlow Gallery, featuring the works of several gallery artists who have explored the human figure in paintings, works on paper and sculpture.

Lani Irwin enjoys back-to-back shows this summer and fall: in addition to participating in “Figurative,” she is presently featured in a two-person show with husband Alan Feltus at the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art in Colorado, through September 1. Irwin will than have a solo exhibition here in November.

Claire Klarewicz-Okser returns to the Katharina Rich Perlow Gallery after a hiatus of a few years with a new series of paintings. Okser works in a realistic yet stylized manner that is often compared to Balthus.

Catherine Prescott, exhibiting for the first time with the gallery, uses classical technique in her portrayals of modern people. Painted in sharp lighting and soft colors reminiscent of Dutch masters, the contemporary, urban subjects of “The Armetta Brothers,” 2004, come across equal part Sopranos and Vermeer.

Longtime gallery artist Stephen Pace has always found inspiration in the simple pleasures of country life. “Pea Pickers,” 1963, is a timeless portrayal of humble women gardeners, in the spirit of Courbet’s Nineteenth Century paintings of female farm laborers, and recalling the style of Picasso’s classical female figures from the 1930s.

An abstracted “figure” has insistently been appearing in Laurie Fendrich’s most recent paintings. In “Bewitched,” 2006, what looks to be a head and a torso emerge from layers of the artist’s distinctive richly colored geometric forms, playing along the boundary between abstraction and representation.

William Clutz has been a celebrated American figurative painter for more than 50 years. The artist’s primary interest lies in people’s interactions within the urban landscape, painting in a semiabstract style that is often compared to Hopper.

The following gallery artists are also included in the exhibition: David Ahlsted, Michael Eade, Joseph Holston, Steven Katz, Sally Michel, Joe Naujokas, Cherry Pickles, John Recco, Richard Segalman, Brian Shure, Abigail Varela and others.
