Cool temperatures and dry conditions greeted runners for the 40th Annual Newtown Parks and Recreation Rooster Run 5K, won by Newtown 23-year-old Kevin Hoyt in a time of 15:35, on June 14.

Nearly 350 participants meandered through the Fairfield Hills campus; the course started and finished near the Newtown Municipal Center building. Cloudy skies gave way to the sun part way through the morning, and temperatures were in the mid 60s at the start.

“The sun didn’t come out ’til the end of the race — great temperatures,” said Hoyt, who was fresh off his Mad Dash Adventure Race victory the weekend before.

A day after humidity, rain, and thunderstorms came through, the course was mostly dried out and runners of a variety of ages laced up their sneakers for a great cause. Proceeds benefit the Newtown Scholarship Association, and approximately 15 sponsors supported the event.

“It’s a privilege to be able to be a part of  it — to see the community come out and do something healthy,” Race Director Mark Gerace said.

Hoyt had a little competition as Westport’s Luke McCambley, 24, came across the finish line in a time of 15:49. Oxford’s Chris Farber, 19, was third in 16:41. Newtown was well-represented, and nine of the ten next finishers were from town.

Kevin Boughan, 38, of Sandy Hook, placed fourth in a time of 16:48. Tyler Dullinger, 16, also of Sandy Hook, came in fifth in 18:55. Newtown 14 year olds Joe Duval and Joshua Bent were sixth and seventh, respectively, with times of 19:01 and 19:51. Newtown’s Bob Burbank, 47, placed eighth, completing the run in a time of 19:53. Sandy Hook’s Riley Rising, 15, came in ninth in 19:55.

The top female finisher was Bethel’s Susie Fiscus, 23, who ran the course in 20:53, good for 16th overall. The second- and third-place females were Sandy Hook residents. Sarah Mawdsley, 15, finished in 21:24, and Sara Pollock, 24, came across the line in 21:42.
