A Celebration

Of Reading

To the Editor:

On behalf of the students at Reed Intermediate School, I would like to thank the many people who helped make our Reading Celebration that took place on Thursday, June 10, one that will not soon be forgotten.

Over 400 students met personal independent reading goals and celebrated by dunking their teachers, librarian, and principal! Parent Lou Romano helped get us the Dunk Tank, the Newtown Fire Department filled it, and Dr Sharon Epple, RIS principal, along with 16 brave teachers joined me in taking the plunge as our young readers stepped up to the pitcher’s mound and did their best to get us wet. The squeals of delight still fill our ears, and those of us who attended are still smiling, remembering the fun.

The students at Reed more than doubled their independent reading this year. Research shows there is a high correlation between independent reading and academic success. Providing time to read, access to good books, and creating a culture where independent reading is valued and celebrated is the foundation of a good independent reading program. How fortunate for our students to be embraced by a community willing to pitch in to support their reading efforts and progress.
