Admirals Win Four Straight
The Newtown Admirals Junior Legion (U17) Baseball team began the season with four well-played wins over local rivals Danbury and Monroe. The ball club is sponsored by Newtown American Legion Post 202 and Bethel Post 100. This past weekâs game summaries are as follows:
Admirals 6, Danbury 4: Behind great pitching by Reid Schmidt and Kyle Wilcoxâs three hits and two runs batted in, the Admirals opened the campaign with a win in the first game of a twin-bill. Schmidt kept Danbury off balance with a mix of pitches holding the opposition to two hits and two earned runs through 5 2/3 innings while fanning four along the way. Wilcox came in and closed the door, earning the save. The Admirals struck first with four runs in the fourth inning, capitalizing on many Danbury miscues and walks. The locals tacked on two more in the fifth and held off a Danbury rally in the sixth.
Admirals 6, Danbury 2: Behind tremendous relief pitching by Jon Hull, the Admirals swept the double header with Danbury. The Admirals took advantage of walks and timely hits to break the game open. Led by Austin Bonadio, Wilcox and Avery Rizzuto, each of whom had two hits, the Admirals pushed across a run in the fourth, two in the fifth, and three in the sixth to close out the game
Admirals 11, Danbury 0: Wilcox threw a complete game shutout, fanning 13 and walking none as the Admirals cruised. Wilcox also contributed three hits. Zack Albin had a triple and a single with 3 RBI, and Nick Spinella had two hits and two RBI. Austin Bonadio added a RBI double and a sac fly.
Admirals 9, Monroe 2: Bonadio baffled the Monroe lineup, pitching six strong innings and giving up one unearned run while scattering four hits and striking out seven. Alex Amaru and Schmidt had two hits and an RBI apiece. Hull and Jimmy Dee each scored two runs to lead the Admirals to their fourth consecutive victory.
