Police report a chain-reaction accident in which five motor vehicles collided on Botsford Hill Road, near the Housatonic Railroadâs rail freight bridge, about 7:49 am June 10.
Police said motorist Louis Gelda, Jr, 43, of Woodbury, who was driving a 2005 Volvo southward on Botsford Hill Road, stopped for a tractor-trailer truck that was on the roadway. After the Volvo stopped, three other southbound vehicles stopped in a line behind the Volvo, police said.
Southbound motorist Kate Swatkowski, 23, of Bridgeport, who was driving a 2006 Nissan, told police she saw the line of stopped vehicles ahead of her and then attempted to stop, but her foot became stuck beneath the Nissanâs brake pedal and she could not stop the auto.
The 2006 Nissan struck the rear end of a 2005 Nissan driven by Anna Carr, 30, of 91 Forest Drive, police said. That impact pushed the 2005 Nissan into the rear end of a 2006 Hyundai driven by Barbara Gambino, 45, of 10 Oak Drive, police said. That collision pushed the 2006 Hyundai into the rear end of a 2005 Honda driven by Joshua Dittmar, 26, of 6 Bishop Circle, according to police. That crash pushed the Honda into the rear end of the Volvo driven by Gelda, police said.
Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps members transported Swatkowski and Gelda to Danbury Hospital for treatment of injuries, police said. Botsford firefighters responded to the accident scene.
Police said they issued Swatkowski an infraction for following too closely.
