Into Successful Aging
The American Geriatric Societyâs recipe for successful aging was Dr Casey Ottâs topic at a recent Lunch and Learn program at Masonicare at Newtown. Dr Ott, medical director at the Southbury Geriatric and Primary Care Center, provided insights into successful aging by describing the geriatricianâs approach through diagnosis, workup, and treatment plan to support older adults in the aging process.Â
Older Americans have considerable control over the quality of their health. Preventive services recommended for people age 65 and older include screenings for vision, hearing, cholesterol, blood pressure, mental processes, alcoholism (questionnaire) and depression (questionnaire). Other important screenings include mammogram, colonoscopy, prostate exam, and glucose level.
Walking is recommended for everyone who is physically able. People who walk for 30 minutes a day can improve their health. âAlso, eating a well-balanced diet and maintaining a healthy weight is very important as we age,â said Dr Ott. âThe number of calories you eat should be balanced against the amount of energy you use.âÂ
Dr Ott also said that being alert to skin cancer is very important.Â
âChanges in the appearance of your skin in general or any mole on your skin should be checked by your healthcare provider,â he told the gathering. âPeople should limit the amount of time spent in the sun and should wear protective clothing when outdoors.Â
âWith good, preventive health care on a routine basis, we can remain functioning longer and extend our lifespan,â Dr Ott added.Â
