NHS Student Helps Bring Out The Inner Writer

In Three Head O’ Meadow Students

After three months of meeting once a week with Newtown High School freshman Lillia McEnaney, Head O’ Meadow students Kendra Saunders, Katie Sailer, and Michael Arena created a story.

On Monday, June 7, Lillia worked with the three students from Susan Rudock’s third grade class in Head O’ Meadow’s library. It was the group’s last meeting of the year, and all that was left was editing and a few touchups.

“I enjoy writing,” said Lillia, who had Mrs Rudock when she was in third grade. “It’s one of my favorite subjects. I just wanted to help other kids enjoy it.”

Kendra, Katie, and Michael were chosen by Mrs Rudock to work with Lillia for being talented writers.

In working on the story, Lillia said each student drew characters and participated in the writing process.

The end product, five pages typed, is a story about friends Sam and Claire, according to the students. Sam and Claire’s parents are kidnapped and taken to a magical land. During their kidnapping the parents are aided by a Professor Zigazoples and magical fairies.

The idea of Lillia helping the students at Head O’ Meadow with their writing came about after she spoke with guidance counselor Jeff Tolson, who suggested she work toward community service hours by tutoring.

“They are great,” said Lillia. “They are all impressive writers, very unique.”

The Head O’ Meadow students primarily came up with the story, characters, and more, according to Lillia. She added her assistance most as an overseer.

“I really wanted them to do all the work themselves,” said the NHS freshman.

According to Lillia, the story about Sam and Claire will be shared with Mrs Rudock’s class when it is finished.
