Farmers Market Opens June 24 At Fairfield Hills
Market Master Mary Fellows has announced that opening day for the 2014 Farmers Market at Fairfield Hills is Tuesday, June 24, from 2 to 6 pm.
Shoppers will find approximately ten vendors selling organic and Connecticut grown spring produce, plants, flowers, and baked goods on the first day of the Market, with many more expected to join the Tuesday afternoon event “as the season grows,” quipped Ms Fellows.
This is the twelfth year for the local Farmers Market.
“We’ve covered a lot of ground in that time,” Ms Fellows said, referring not only to the expansion of products since the first years, but the numerous locations in which the market has cropped up, in its ongoing search for a permanent home.
The Farmers Market, originally known as the Sandy Hook Organic Farmers Market, started out small and was located along the banks of the Pootatuck River at 5 Glen Road. From there, it has bounced between space behind St John’s Episcopal Church in 2008 and a brief stint in 2009 on the grounds of the former Lexington Gardens on Church Hill Road, then back to St John’s.
In 2010, the Farmers Market moved to Fairfield Hills, where it has also migrated locations over the past four years. Currently, the vendors are located on property off Wasserman Way at Fairfield Hills, and are looking forward to a great year, said Ms Fellows.
Connecticut growers Shortt’s Farm of Sandy Hook, Waldingfield Farm from Washington, and Daffodil Farms of Southbury anchor the Farmers Market once again this summer, Ms Fellows said. Also returning is Beldotti Bakery of Norwalk, with breads and samples of its popular pesto and mozzarella cheese, and Biscotti, Etc of Sandy Hook.
The Farmers Market at Fairfield Hills features children’s attractions and musical entertainment throughout July and August. Roger Sprung on banjo, and company, will provide music at opening day. A full lineup of summer music can be found at the Farmers Market Fairfield Hills Facebook page, said Ms Fellows.
