10th Appalachian Craft Fair, July 7-8

SHERMAN — On Friday, July 7, 2000 and Saturday, July 8, Holy Trinity Church will host its tenth annual Appalachian Craft Fair. The volunteers of the fair have not wavered from their original purpose of the fair, to “Help the people of the Appalachian area help themselves.”

Appalachia historically has been among the highest poverty regions in the United States. Because of their poverty many of the people have been unable to create savings to relocate. While aware of their many problems – among them the closing of the mines that once provided the principle source of employment and income for the area, as well as minimal education standards – Appalachian natives remain faithful to their family and home.

Fair hours will be noon to 8 pm on Friday, then 10 am to 2 pm on Saturday, at the church, on Route 37 in the center of Sherman.

Among the items featured will be heirloom quality quilts, woodenwares, pottery, toys, weaving items and hand woven baskets.
