Diocese Selects Interim Administrator
BRIDGEPORT â Monsignor Laurence Bronkiewicz, chancellor of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Bridgeport, has been selected as the dioceseâs administrator until the Vatican appoints a replacement for the former bishop, Edward M. Egan.
Msgr Bronkiewicz, 53, was elected to the post on Wednesday, June 21, following a two-hour meeting by the 12 priests who comprise the College of Consultors in the diocese. A native of Norwalk and current resident of Assumption Parish in Westport, Msgr Bronkiewicz has been chancellor since January 25, 1999. He also is a consultor.
The College of Consultors, which convenes when a bishopâs seat is empty, can appoint any priest in the diocese to fill the interim position. Bishop Egan officially assumed duties as archbishop of the New York Archdiocese this week.
No timetable has been set by the Vatican as to when a new bishop of Bridgeport will be appointed.
