ADA Celebrates Tenth Anniversary
HARTFORD â On Saturday, July 15, at the State Capitol in Hartford, the Americans with Disabilities Act Coalition of Connecticut will hold a public celebration of the tenth anniversary of the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The event, which runs from 11:00 am until 3:00 pm, will include entertainment as well as speakers who will tell their personal stories about how the ADA has positively affected their lives in the workplace, at school, and in their communities.
The ADA, which was signed into law on July 26, 1990, guarantees people with disabilities the right to freedom from discrimination based on their disability. It mandates that individuals with disabilities have equal access to employment and a wide range of services provided by public and private entities.
According to Michelle Duprey, President of the ADA Coalition, âThe ADA was intended not just to remove barriers, but to overcome the historical perception that limitations are synonymous with incapacity and dependency. We have a lot to celebrate, but our job is by no means done.â
Transportation assistance is available to persons with disabilities who wish to attend but have no ride, by calling 860/297-4383, 800/842-7303, or 860/566-8714 (TTY) and asking for the ADA Coalition.
