Public Invited To Reception For Commissioned 12/14 Memorial Sculpture
A glass memorial to the victims of 12/14 will be unveiled at a public reception Sunday, June 29, from 1 to 4 pm, at Curtis Packaging, 44 Berkshire Road.
Commissioned by local businessman Don Droppo, Sr, the 21-inch-high glass sculpture on a 26- by 30-inch base is a library scene of stained glass books lining six shelves, which surround 20 tiny glass chairs. The shelves represent the teachers who were lost 12/14, and the empty chairs honor the students. Etched into the front of the sculpture’s base, between two single library shelves is the date, the only obvious reference to December 14, 2012.
Mr Droppo commissioned the piece from well-known Santa Fe, N.M., artist Lucy Lyon. Ms Lyon is known for her ability to express complex emotion and inspire thoughtfulness with her cast-glass sculptures. The artist will be on hand when the sculpture is unveiled to the public, and will speak at 2 pm.
The sculpture will be on display at Curtis Packaging throughout July, from 9 am to 4 pm, Monday through Friday. It will then be offered to local community groups for permanent display. Interested parties can contact Mr Droppo at .Donzct@aol.com
