Base Technologies Wins Spring Championship
Base Technologies defeated Silverstri Fencing 6-5 to win the 15U/14U Newtown Spring Baseball Championship at Newtown Middle School Field this past week.
The winners got strong pitching from Dean Demers, John Lebinksi, and Kaleb Rowe. Demers also smacked two hits â one a long, two-run double.
Silvestri battled back from a 5-0 deficit with five fourth-inning runs and seemingly had Base Tech on the ropes. Silvestriâs ace pitcher David Gerics was on the mound for the final three innings, throwing a nearly un-hittable fastball. He yielded no hits in the final three innings and struck out five. But in the final inning, Ben Stoller managed to foul off a pitch and draw a walk on a 3-2 count. He then stole second base. Rowe lofted a high fly to right field, and Stoller gambled by tagging up and racing to third base. Right fielder Alex Lapinski threw a beautiful one-hop throw, but Stoller beat it by a step, and the ball skipped off the third basemanâs glove. Stoller kept running and beat the throw home.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, Rowe came through with a clutch save, retiring three straight batters. He struck out the final two with blazing fast balls on the outside corner to nail down the championship. Base Tech jumped out to a 2-0 first-inning lead after Brock Chimileski ripped a double, and Demers walked. Chimileski scored on a wild pitch, and Demers scored when Alex Romeo was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
In the next inning, Base Tech upped the lead to 5-0 on walks to Andrew Martinez, Greg Horne, Mike Daubert, and Chimileski, and Demersâ double to right center. Silvestri tied the game on seven walks and a two-RBI single by Mike Davis. Relief pitcher Lebinski came in with the bases loaded and pitched magnificently, getting Base Tech out of the inning on a groundball to third baseman Martinez. Lebinski then struck out six consecutive batters with a pinpoint fast ball and a knees-buckling curve.
