Storm Moves Through Newington Soccer Tournament To Claim Title

After winning the U11 boys’ travel league championship, The Storm ended the year by winning the Newington End Of  Season Soccer Tournament.

Newtown beat host Newington 5-2 in the first game. Jamie Cochrane started the festivities with a goal from well outside the box early in the game. Thomas Leuci then scored off a corner kick with a quick volley into the goal. Hayes Kelchner and Sebatian Forero made some nifty moves on their scoring runs. Nathan Augenbraun closed out the game with a blast from the top of the box. Connery Mayer and Jack Riley played overwhelming defense to frustrate Newington’s offense.

Goalkeeper Robert Katrinak and the Newtown D shut down the most powerful offense they would face all weekend for a 4-1 win over Middletown. Shane Gattey scored twice in the triumph. Michael Meyers drove a shot past multiple Middletown players. For a tally, and Sebastian Forero made the play of the day, heading the ball in off a corner kick. Owen Samson and Austin Engler kept the play on the Middletown side with quick passes and great runs at the goal. Sam Grossano and Forest Weatherby were tenacious, keeping the ball from the dangerous Middletown goal scorers.

In Game three, against Monroe, Newtown found itself down 2-0 early but quickly turned things around, winning 3-2. Once again Gattey sparked the team with a quick scoring run getting Newtown back in the game. Engler tied the game off a Thomas Leuci pass. Michael Meyers put Newtown in front for good late in the second half. Owen Samson put continuous pressure on Monroe with powerful runs at the goal. After letting Monroe off the hook early, Jamie Cochrane, Connery Mayer, and Forest Weatherby put the clamps down on defense.

In the final game against Bristol, Newtown was back in form with a 4-1 win to close out the tournament. Meyers started things off with a typical Meyers blast from a distance. Gattey got into the action with deft moves that led to a goal. Nathan Augenbraun and Sebastian Forero scored with the nifty flair they have had all year long. Grossano kept the offense alive with great passing and once again the defense of Riley, Cochrane, Mayer, and Weatherby, with Katrinak in goal, shut down another offense.
