Warriors Swinging Away In Summer League

Newtown Warriors 15U/14U Connecticut Summer Baseball League results from this past week are as follows:

Pomperaug 10, Warriors 6: Pomperaug capitalized on five Newtown errors, slapped some timely hits, and used smart base running to win the league opener last Friday night at Fairfield Hills Field. Down 1-0 in the first inning, Newtown’s Max Temple led off the season by crushing a long double down the left field line. Nicky Sajovic followed with a bunt single, and Temple scored on the catcher’s errant throw. The Warriors took a 4-3 lead in the third inning. Alex Romeo singled down the left field line, stole second and moved to third on a groundout. Sajovic walked, and Eric Sutton blooped an RBI single to center to score Romeo. The centerfielder’s throw in an attempt to get Sajovic at third was wild. Sajovic scored, and Sutton moved to third. With Ben Stoller batting, the pitcher threw a wild pitch, and Sutton scored. Newtown didn’t get a hit the rest of the game but eked out two runs on walks and passed balls by the catcher. Newtown’s John Lebinski came in to pitch after Pomperaug had scored 10 runs and struck out four batters and didn’t yield a hit in 1 2/3 innings.

Fairfield National 11, Warriors 1: Fairfield National, one of the state’s best teams, was too strong for the Warriors in the second round of the Jimmy Fund Tournament Saturday at Bethel’s Middle School Field. The Warriors had won their first-round game when Trumbull forfeited. Against Fairfield, Newtown was limited to five hits — singles by Max Temple, Nicky Sajovic, and Austin Ekstrom, and a single and RBI double by Eric Sutton. Sutton also made a spectacular play at shortstop, diving headlong to stop a ball crushed up the middle. He jumped to his feet and threw a strike to the outstretched glove of first baseman Ben Stoller to nail the runner. Left fielder Temple also made a tremendous first-inning catch, diving through the air toward the left field line to haul in a sizzling first-inning line drive. Right fielder Troy Larsen also made a nice running catch in the gap in the fifth inning.

Jimmy Fund Baseball Tournament

Warriors 10, Watertown 0: Newtown struck for five first-inning runs and coasted to a 10-0 win Monday in the Jimmy Fund Tournament at Bethel High School Field. Newtown starting pitcher Ekstrom threw four shutout innings, yielding just one single and striking out six batters. Relief pitcher Troy Larsen finished the game with two shutout innings before the game was called because of the 10-run rule. Newtown’s Brandon Cooper, Ekstrom, and Lebinski each knocked in two runs with singles. Ekstrom had two hits, and Newtown catcher Brock Chimileski singled, doubled and had a solid defensive game.
