Head Oâ Meadow Fourth Graders Publish A Literary Magazine
By Eliza Hallabeck
Taunton Press Fine Homebuilding managing editor Debra Silber and art designer Teresa Fernandes met with Head Oâ Meadow fourth grade students at the companyâs building on South Main Street on Thursday, June 10, roughly one month after introducing a joint project to the students.
On May 3, Ms Silber and Ms Fernandes, with Taunton Press art assistant Kat Riehle, introduced the program to the students at Head Oâ Meadow School.
During the first meeting, it was explained the three would be helping the students to create a literary magazine. Over the next month students wrote poetry, fables, historical fiction, and mythological stories. Students also submitted their own works of art to be published with their works of fiction in what would become the Hawk Squawk, A Literary Journal.
Each fourth grade class at the school participated in the project.
Once students finished writing their stories and creating their illustrations, the compiled finished products were given to The Taunton Press to create the final product.
Except for the cost of transportation, the program was completely free to the school due to the volunteer efforts from The Taunton Press .
Head Oâ Meadow students and The Taunton Press have created two past literary journals, according Head Oâ Meadow fourth grade teacher Pat Kurz.
Ms Silber and Ms Fernandes gave a presentation, before handing out copies of the completed product.
âCongratulations,â said Ms Silber. âYou guys did a fantastic job.â
