Mother Nature more than cooperated and gave Barn Star Productions a perfect day for the first Newtown Antiques Market on Saturday, June 21.

“We sure did get off to a great start,” Frank Gaglio, show manager, said, “and the dealers made it happen.” Eighty-five exhibitors came for the market, staged just off the flagpole green on the Fairfield Hills campus, with the booths surrounding Shelton House.

The market was run for the benefit of Newtown Historical Society, and members were there, under tent, to explain the mission of the society and to interest people in joining. The Lions Club was also represented, offering raffle tickets for the annual drawing of a vintage Mustang convertible. Hook & Ladder Company, No. 1, arrived with a long red trailer packed with a large grill, hot dogs and hamburgers, chips, and an assortment of drinks. Funds made that day by the firemen will go towards the construction of the new firehouse planned for property behind Trinity Church off Church Hill Road.

“We had a nice turnout, about 100 people were in line when the show opened at 10 am and by 5 pm when the show closed, about 800 visitors had shopped the show,” Gaglio said, and “many of the dealers reported having good sales and a profitable day.”

For the most part, dealers sold “smalls,”including a pair of Queen Anne brass candlesticks, a dome-top painted tole document box, a small foot stool, a cast iron eagle, a poured stone garden ornament and several cast iron garden urns, a small horse weathervane and an early painted checkerboard, to name but a few things. Probably the largest object sold was an early Queen Anne drop-leaf table with cabriole legs and pad feet.

“We are planning to be back next year,” Frank Gaglio said, but before that happens he will be running antiques shows in Wilton and Greenwich, and two in Concord, N.H., in early August.
