Keep an eye out for “Laurel and Hardy” in front of the Edmond Town Hall on Sunday, June 29, when the theater will host screenings of two Hollywood classics. The screenings will be the next installment of the 2014 Sunday Cinema Series celebrating the 75th anniversary of “The Greatest Year in Film — 1939,” presented by Newtown Cultural Arts Commission. 

The series concept was to help highlight other uses for the new projection technology of the historic town hall’s theater, besides the customary second-run movies, and to help support continued upgrades in the theater.

“The new equipment will make every film and event in the theater better than ever. Perhaps our audiences will be inspired to make a donation, if they can,” said Jen Rogers, coordinator of the film series.

The schedule for June 29 will be: 1 pm, Laurel & Hardy’s Flying Deuces; 4 pm, Ninotchka starring Greta Garbo; and 7 pm, a double feature of Ninotchka and Flying Deuces.

Admission for the first two screenings is $2, and $4 for the double feature.

In Laurel and Hardy’s The Flying Deuces, Oliver is devastated when he discovers that the innkeeper’s daughter he has fallen in love with is already married. In hopes that Oliver will soon forget his broken heart, Oliver and best friend Stan misguidedly join the Foreign Legion.

With their classic antics, complete with a little song and dance, here’s an opportunity to see one of our most beloved comic duos.

The screenings of The Flying Deuces is sponsored by Two Loons Jewelry, a Newtown-based company owned by two sisters who hand make chic pendants and accessories from upcycled vintage game pieces.

Billed as “MGM’s laugh riot,” Ninotchka is a charming romantic comedy starring the stunning Greta Garbo in her first American comedy. Garbo is captivating as a no nonsense Russian official who melts under the warmth of a Parisian love affair with Count Leon, played by Melvyn Douglas.

The film was built around the slogan “Garbo laughs!” which came before the screenplay was even written. 

It received four Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, Best Actress, Best Original Story and Best Screenplay.

Ninotchka is being sponsored by Avancé Esthétiques European Day Spa in Newtown.

The movie series is suitable for all ages. It debuted on May 25 with screenings of The Wizard of Oz and The Little Princess.
