A Record Number Of Kids Head To Camp

A record number of Newtown children are expected to attend the Parks & Recreation day camps this summer. Most of those camps begin Monday.

This week, P&R Director Barbara Kasbarian announced that an unprecedented 1,214 children had signed up for the three two-week day camps at Dickinson and Treadwell parks. Another 1,488 kids are enrolled in the 19 sports camps to take place at various times throughout the summer.

“We’ve got a total of some 3,000 children signed up. That’s an all-time high,” said Mrs Kasbarian. “That’s at least 400 more than last year. The number of kids in this town continues to grow.”

Things look to be particularly busy next week as 224 kids cram into Dickinson Park with another 211 arriving at Treadwell. Fortunately, the two camps appear to be in good hands with the experienced Jason Hirou heading the staff at Dickinson Park and Ryan Moore in charge at Treadwell.

“We’re looking forward to a safe and happy summer for all campers,” Mrs Kasbarian said.

The Newtown summer camp program is now called “Camp Lash,” in honor of Newtown resident Howard Lasher who has contributed and collected several thousands of dollars to the campership fund in recent years.
