Scam Artist Targets Newtown Parade

Kym Stendahl, coordinator of the Labor Day Parade Committee, said this week she is concerned that a con artist may be representing himself as a member of the committee to collect advertising dollars meant for the parade program.

Ms Stendahl said a man who identified himself  only as “John”  called at least one local business  and demanded immediate payment for an ad.

“He wasn’t very nice about it either,” she said.

When the man called back a second time, the receptionist asked for his phone number, and he immediately hung up, according to the merchant, who declined to be identified.

“This is not anyone connected to the parade committee,” Ms Stendahl said. “I think it is just unbelievable and  really awful.”

Brian Amey, parade committee member, said emails were sent out through the Newtown Chamber of Commerce this week to its members who warn them of a potential scam. He said he had not heard whether the caller had contacted any other businesses.

The incident has been reported to the police, Ms Stendahl said.
