Kathy Deng, daughter of Hongbing Deng and Dr Yanmin Yu of Sandy Hook, received her doctor of medicine degree from New York Medical College, Valhalla, N.Y., during a commencement ceremony on May 26. Dr Deng also earned the Citation of Service, Cor et Manus, award from the medical college.Â
Jennifer L. Spanedda, daughter of Debra and Peter Spanedda of Sandy Hook, was named on the deanâs list for the spring 2010 semester at Endicott College, Beverly, Mass. To be named on the deanâs list at the college, students must obtain a minimum grade point average of 3.5, receive no grade below a C, and be enrolled in a minimum of 12 credits for the semester.
Alex Hennessey, a music theory and composition major, was awarded Departmental Honors and Outstanding Student Award from the music department at the College of Charleston in South Carolina. To earn departmental honors students must have a 3.7 or higher grade point average. To be recognized with the Outstanding Student Award, a studentâs artistic/scholarly contribution as determined by the department or program. Alex was also named on the spring 2010 semesterâs deanâs list at the college with Highly Distinguished Honors. Alex is also enrolled in the pre-med program at the college, and earned the William Aiken Fellows Summer Enrichment Grant to conduct epigenetic research at the Yale School of Medicine in the ob/gyn department.
Alanna M. Gilbert of Sandy Hook has been named to the deanâs list for the spring 2010 semester at the University of Vermont, Burlington. Alanna is a first-year English major in the College of Arts & Sciences. To be named to the deanâs list at the university students must have a grade-point average of 3.0 or better and rank in the top 20 percent of their class in their respective college or school.
Allen Hubbard, son of Nancie and Allen Hubbard, was awarded a grant from Saint Michaelâs College for a study in identification of transporters used in rice germination. Allen is a junior biology major , at the Burlington, Vt., Catholic college.
