Newtown 12s Win Districts And Advances to States

Newtown’s 12-year-old 70-foot baseball team won its district tournament this week and, in doing so, advanced to the state tourney.

Newtown toppled Middlebury 23-1 in a run-rule, four-inning game to begin district tourney play. JP Blanco jumpstarted the offense with a three-run homer in the first inning. Newtown’s offense was led by Bubba Leblanc, Garrison Buzzanca, Dean Demers, and Mike Davis, each of whom collected three hits. Davis and Pat Mullins had three-run homers and Kaleb Rowe added a solo home run.

Southbury was the next opponent, and Newtown used the same formula of jumping out front early and never looking back. Mullins hit a three-run homer in the first inning on his way to a three-home run, seven-RBI performance in an 11-0 win. Brandon Marks stroked a solo shot, and Leblanc added two hits. Pitchers Marks, Davis and Mullins combined for the shutout.

In the winner’s bracket final, Woodbury was the opponent. Newtown put 10 runs on the board in the top of the first inning on the way to a 16-0 run-rule win. Davis hit a grand slam in the first. Demers had two hits, including a two-run homer, Justin Devellis had two hits and scored three runs, Leblanc had two hits and Marks had two hits, including a two-run homer.

Newtown faced Woodbury in the championship game as well and jumped out to an 8-0 lead after the first inning on the way to a 24-3 whitewashing. Demers led the offense with three hits, including two homeruns. Also contributing were Austin Raftery with three hits, Devellis with two hits, and Davis and Mullins each of whom homered in the effort.

In state tourney action, Newtown faced the Shoreline team in game one. Newtown struck early and often in a 13-0 win. Mullins had three home runs and seven RBIs to lead the offense. Davis slugged two homers, and Marks and Matt Mossberger contributed two hits each in the effort.

Game two of the tournament was against Greenwich. In a nail-biter, Newtown prevailed 5-3. Devellis had three hits and Dean Demers had a pair of RBIs in the win. Raftery hit a long home run for Newtown.

Newtown advanced to face New Canaan in the winner’s bracket final this week. Newtown is hoping to advance to the Regional round of the tournament in New Hampshire.
