On June 4 Corey Allred, an eighth grade student and a resident of Sandy Hook, was presented with two academic achievement awards from Wooster School in Danbury. He was awarded the Latin Prize and the Science Prize. Corey will be continuing his education in the Wooster Upper School.

Saint Michael’s College in Colchester, Vt., has released its Dean’s List, and Tierney L. Carey, daughter of Timothy and Cheryl Carey of Newtown, made the list. Tierney is a junior business administration major at the school. Students must have a minimum of 12 credits and a grade point average of 3.4 for the semester to make the Dean’s List.

On May 17 Bryce P. Conlan of Newtown graduated from Columbia College Chicago with a bachelor’s degree in audio arts and aCoustics.

Christie Fogelstrom of Newtown recently graduated from Immaculate High School in Danbury,. She won the Rebecca Duff Memorial Scholarship, and earlier this semester she won Prom Queen.

Jeff Mark LeFlamme of Newtown made the Commendable Scholar list for the spring 2008 semester at Mitchell College, which is in New London. Commendable Scholars are awarded to students with grade point averages between 3.0 and 3.49.

Azureen Janelle of Newtown made the Dean’s List for the spring semester at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln. To qualify, students must take a minimum of 12 graded semester hours and have higher than a 3.75 grade point average.

In Poughkeepsie, N.Y., Maxwell Michael Kaye, son of Gary Kaye of Newtown, graduated from Vassar College on May 25. He majored in Environmental Studies.

William Manville, son of James and Barbara Manville of Sandy Hook, has made the Dean’s List at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), in Rochester, N.Y. In order to be recognized for Dean’s List students at RIT must have at least 12 credits for the semester and maintain a 3.4 grade point average.

Elizabeth “Tilly” Philbrick of Newtown made the Dean’s List this past semester at Tufts University, which is in Medford, Mass. Elizabeth graduated from Newtown High School in 2007 and she is a double major of Biochemistry and Spanish at Tufts University.

Another Newtown resident, Caitlin Weber, recently graduated from the College of William and Mary, which is in Williamsburg, V.A.

Three Newtown residents — Vanessa Courchene-Roy, Grace Galie and Zachary Midurski — were awarded their diplomas from Wooster School on June 14. Vanessa also won the French Prize. A Senior Independent Study Commendation was awarded to Zachary for building a Rube Goldberg machine. Wooster School is a preschool to twelfth grade school in Danbury.

The University of Scranton, in Scranton, Penn., has released its Dean’s List for the 2008 spring semester. Three Newtown students made the list by obtaining a 3.5 grade point average or higher, and maintain at least the minimum number of credit hours that the school requires for a full time student. They are Patrick J. Daly, Kelley E. Fitzgerald, and Alexa A. Vacaro.

Heidi M. Ekstrom, Mark D. Laslo, Matthew J. Meehan, Thomas R. Wilson, all of Newtown, and Joseph R. Brewer, Gregory B. Golino, and Lauren E. Nemeth of Sandy Hook all made the Dean’s List for the spring semester at Bryant University in Smithfield, R.I.

The spring semester Dean’s List for Gettysburg College, in Gettysburg, Penn., includes Tara Elizabeth Gaston of Newtown, and Caitlin Ann O’Keefe and Brian J. Tenney of Sandy Hook. The students made the list by maintaining an average grade point average higher than 3.33 for their semester’s work.

At Connecticut College Mary C. Gover and Kathleen I. Sharnick of Newtown and Rasul Hafizov of Sandy Hook achieved recognition of the Dean’s List. To obtain the Dean’s List at Connecticut College students must keep a grade point average of 3.3. 

On May 18 three local residents graduated from Quinnipiac University, in Hamden. Stephanie R. Logan of Newtown received a bachelor of science degree in international business, Ruthanna E. Shanley of Newtown received a bachelor of science degree in dIagnostic imaging, and Christopher M. Wolcott of Sandy Hook received a bachelor of arts degree in communications.

Two Newtown residents were recognized for their achievements at Bentley College in Waltham, Mass. William Meier, a finance major, made it on the Dean’s List by achieving a grade point average higher than a 3.3. Zachary Gray Lyon, an economics-finance major, made the President’s List by achieving a grade point average higher than 3.7.

Lissie Knudsen, a sixth grade student at the Housatonic Valley Waldorf School, received one of ten Honorable Mentions awarded in a national essay writing contest. The German Information Center USA, which is based out of Washington, D.C., sponsored the contest, which asked students to write an essay called “Germany in Class.” Lizzie’s essay on Germany explained why it is important to study the culture and the language of the country.

Odyssey of The Mind, a problem solving group for students at Reed Intermediate School, went on a journey to Maryland for The World Finals this past spring. The students had eight challenges over six months to solve, and they brought their solutions to the competition at the Comcast Center at the University of Maryland. There were more than 840 teams of students at the finals, and 5,000-plus students in total, according to Michelle Hankin, a coach for one of Reed Intermediate School’s teams. Newtown had 16 students in three teams at the event.

Road Rally Division 1, which placed 10th out of 57 teams in their problem division, included Baxter Hankin, Talia Hankin Emma Hungaski, Douglas Main, Megan McDonald, Jesse Sailer and Kyle Watkins.  Road Rally Division 2 included Bethany Dubois, Charlotte Gray, Rebecca Vodola and Katie Wojcik. Eccentrics Division1, which placed 16th out of 65 teams in its problem division, included Portia Baudisch, Kristina Patterson, Bailey Smith, Forest Speed and Michael Ziluck.
