Roxbury Library To Celebrate Calder

ROXBURY — On Sunday, July 20, from 2 to 4 pm, Minor Memorial Library, at 23 South Street, will host a reception to celebrate “Mountains,” a monumental sculpture by Alexander Calder.

The sculpture, which graces the lawn at the entrance to the library, is on long-term loan through arrangement with the Calder Foundation, a private family foundation. Mr Calder, widely regarded as the foremost sculptor of the 20th Century, lived and worked in Roxbury for many years. Although “Mountains,” a matte black stabile that was one of Calder’s final creations, arrived at the library last fall, the welcome celebration has been scheduled for July to coincide with the 110th anniversary of the artist’s birth.

“We are grateful to the Calder Foundation for the generosity of their loan and we’re inviting all our friends and neighbors to come to our reception and enjoy this magnificent work of art,” said library director Valerie Annis.

The reception will take place rain or shine and refreshments will be served. Minor Memorial Library is handicapped-accessible.  Call the library at 860-350-2181 for information and directions.
