U10 Hawks Get Three More Wins
The U10 Hawks Babe Ruth softball team went 3-0 in Fairfield County League play with wins over Bethel, Wilton and New Fairfield this past week. On the road in Bethel, the Hawks continued to get great pitching from the trio of Gillian Galante, Mikayla Kuligowski and Lauren Wilcox who combined for 12 strikeouts in the 22-3 victory. In the top of the first, the Hawks scored seven runs on seven hits and a walk.
Leading the hitting attack was Caitlyn Linden with a double and two singles for two RBIs, Katie Laaksonen with two hits and three RBIs, Haley Ryan with two singles and three RBIs, Emily Woznick with a hit and three RBIs and Shannon Mullins with two hits and two RBIs.
The Hawks followed up with a 14-2 win over Wilton the next night. A great pitching matchup from the start, both pitchers combined for 23 strikeouts and allowed only hits throughout the game. Newtown took advantage of walks and aggressive base running in the win. The lone hit for Newtown was a two-RBI single by Linden. Galante got the win with five innings of work.Â
In the final game of the week the Hawks struggled at the plate, but came away with a 3-1 victory over New Fairfield. Solid pitching and defensive play kept New Fairfield off the bases in four consecutive innings. Galante went six innings, had 11 strikeouts and gave up one hit. All of Newtownâs scoring came in the second inning as Woznick and Laaksonen set the table with a walk and dropped third strike advance. Galante then laid down a picture-perfect sacrifice bunt that scored Woznick. Ryan walked and Aimee Alexander smacked a hard single to right field to score Laaksonen and Ryan.
The U10 Hawks will play in the Babe Ruth State Tournament this weekend in Stamford, the first game is at 4 pm on Friday against Norwalk.
