BLAKELOCK PAINTING TO CROSS THE BLOCK AT HESSE GALLERIES, 4 CUTS EMAILED

WD/cd set 7/14 –

OTEGO, N.Y. — A very large Ralph Albert Blakelock “Indian Encampment” oil painting will come to the market on August 23 at Hesse Galleries, along with two signed Handel table lamps, a pair of Tiffany Studios bronze tall candleholders and a Robert Emmett Owen “Woods in Winter” oil on canvas.

These are but a few of many treasures from the estate of ex-Broadway show girl, Sonia Greenova (also Greenov and Greenoff) of New York City, 1900–1933. Greenova, formerly with the Moscow Grand Opera Company, was an actress and singer on Broadway in the 1920s. She was also the alleged common-law wife of millionaire New York lawyer and realty dealer Edgar S. Appleby (1862–1935). Upon her death, being childless, Greenova’s estate passed to her nephew, whose widow has now consigned these pieces to Hesse Galleries to be auctioned.

The newly discovered Blakelock painting, estimated at $450/650,000, is on a wood panel measuring 35½ inches by 59¼ inches and is signed R.A. Blakelock in red in the lower right corner. It is in good condition with some minor flaking. There are 11 Indians depicted in the painting, plus three teepees, three horses and in the foreground are two canoes. Inspection of the painting by appointment is encouraged, or it may be viewed during scheduled previews on August 22 from 1 to 5 pm and August 23 from 8 to 10 am.

The August 23 auction will also present a large Americana offering of folk art, country furniture and related accessories from a well-known New Hartford, N.Y., estate collection. This collection includes several folk art eagles, a top hat trade sign, a painted tall case clock. Vintage Santas, many folk carvings and numerous other choice smalls. The auction also includes paintings by several other artists, such as C. Braley, J. Constable (attributed) and Ch. Jacque.

Hesse Galleries is at 385 Main Street. For information, www.hessegalleries.com or 607-988-2523.
