Highlights from recent U10 Newtown Hawks travel softball games are as follows:
On July 7, the U10 Newtown Hawks Travel Softball team defeated Shepaug 24-6. Pitcher Shannon Cheh walked 12 batters, struck out eight and allowed only five hits in the 24-6 victory. Jackie Gouveia and Tegan Doherty both went 4-for-4 and combined to drive in eight runs. Emily Bell ripped a double and Isabella Luciano drove in two with a home run. The Hawks improved their league record to 5-3.
On July 10, the Hawks won their game against the Norwalk Zoomers. Sydney Flint tied her season high and struck out 12 batters while allowing only one hit in the 12-3 win. Rachel OâGrady scored twice and Isabella Luciano, Shannon Cheh, and Emily Bell each drove in a pair of runs. The Hawks led just 3-2 after two innings before pulling away. Jillian Lasorsa made a great heads-up play, catching a shallow outfield hit and then quickly throwing to second base for a double play as the Hawks improved to 6-3 in league play.Â
The Hawks played a double header against the Southbury Heat in the heat on July 11. In the first game, Shannon Cheh walked in four runs in the first inning but quickly got back in the grove and did not allow any additional runs in the 22-4 victory. Cassidy Keller reached first base three times with a hit, a walk, and by reaching on a dropped third strike. Sammie Strocchia went 4-for-4 and drove in a team high five runs. In the second game, the teams were tied 6-6 in the fourth before the Hawks went on to a 15-8 win. The Hawks picked up four runs behind the hitting of Rylee Mulligan, Jillian Lasorsa, and Sammie Strocchia. Southbury pulled to within 8-6 and loaded the bases with no outs. Poised to tie the game or take the lead, Southbury did no more damage as Hawks shortstop Rylee Mulligan caught a line drive, stepped on second and threw to Jillian Lasorsa covering third for an inning-ending triple play. With the two wins in Southbury, the Hawks improved their regular season record to 8-3.
The Hawks, following games with Westport and Wilton, will compete in the Babe Ruth State Tournament in Stamford this week.
