Inferno Baseball Team Is On Fire

Newtown 10-year-old baseball team leads its division midway through the Route 84 B-track summer baseball league. The Newtown Inferno has reeled off five straight wins to vault into first place in the East Division of the Route 84 League.

Playing for first place against the then division-leading Danbury team on July 9, Newtown pulled away for a 9-1 triumph. Eugene Citrano, fresh from returning from vacation, hit the first pitch he’s seen in two weeks since vacation into the night at Rogers Park in Danbury for a first inning two-out, two-run triple. Greg Brissette was sharp on the mound, retiring eight of the first nine batters he faced on only 24 pitches in three innings of work. The lone hit was quickly erased when Pete Debona threw out the runner trying to steal third base in the second inning.

Harry Eppers extended the Inferno’s lead to 4-0 with a two-run single in the fourth. Citrano, Adam Beckett, and Adam Manes added hits of their own in the same inning to extend Newtown’s lead to 6-0. Silas Decker led off the fifth with a single to center and later scored. Ethan Aug hit the second triple of the game for Newtown in the sixth and scored on Rhett Saunder’s fielders choice to top off the Inferno’s scoring. Adam Beckett and Aug held Danbury’s bats in check the last three innings, allowing only one  run.

The Inferno will send four players to the All-Star game to be held at Roger’s Park in Danbury on July 17 at 7:30 pm. Adam Beckett, Jacob Steinebrey, Billy Kase, and Greg Brisette will be the Newtown Inferno’s representatives. Beckett and Steinebrey are making their second appearances in the All-star game having played in last years 9-year-old game.

The Newtown Lightning, the West Division leaders will send Wesley Scriven, Ryan Escoda, and Robert Lombardo to the mid-summer classic.
