Newtown Swimmers Compete In Mako Swim Meet

The Regional YMCA of Western Connecticut Mako Swim Team, which includes Newtown residents, hosted its first Long Course Invitational on June 28 and 29 at the new 50 Meter Outdoor Pool in Brookfield. Nine other teams were in attendance for a total of 302 participating athletes. Mako swimmers posted strong results, with swimmers qualifying for YMCA National Championships, USA CT Age Group, USA CT Senior and Eastern Zone Championships 44 times throughout the two-day event. All events were scored as either 12 and under, or 13 and over and participants swam in long course meters.

Newtown brothers Nick and Chris Lafky swam both days. Nick Lafky competed in a time trial for the 200 Breaststroke (3:07.37), qualifying for the CT Age Group Championships in that event. He also placed fifth in the 50 Freestyle (31.36L), 10th in the 100 Freestyle (1:12.22L), fourth in the 50 Breaststroke (38.56L) and 400 Freestyle (5:42.44L) and ninth in the 200 Freestyle (2:36.26L).

Chris Lafky finished 22nd in the 50 Freestyle (41.86L), 27th in the 100 Freestyle (1:39.41L), 15th in the 200 Freestyle (3:26.52L), 13th in the 50 Backstroke (49.29L), 9th in the 100 Backstroke (1:51.01L) and 8th in the 200 IM (4:11.04L).

Richard Huffman came in 11th in the 100 Freestyle (1:13.44L), third in the 50 Backstroke (36.01L), sixth in the 50 Butterfly (35.99L) and second in the 200 IM (2:59.18L), qualifying for the CT Age Group Championships in all four events. He also placed 10th in the 200 Freestyle (2:39.74L) and eighth in the 100 Breaststroke (1:40.66L).

Zach Carfi placed sixth in the 100 Breaststroke (1:21.58L) and seventh in the 200 Backstroke (2:59.79L), qualifying in the 100 for the CT Senior Championships and in both events for CT Age Group Championships. He also placed 33rd in the 200 Freestyle (2:30.20L), 17th in the 100 Butterfly (1:23.81L), 15th in the 200 IM (2:49.04L) and 18th in the 400 IM (6:08.13L).

Kiley Banks placed 22nd in the 50 Freestyle (40.10L), 16th in the 200 Freestyle (3:38.05L) and 21st in the 50 Backstroke (52.61L).

The Delia Family was represented by Cami, George, Aless and Hannah. Cami came in 31st in the 50 Freestyle (50.11L), 23rd in the 50 Backstroke (58.61L) and 18th in the 100 Breaststroke (2:19.29L). Hannah placed 16th in the 100 Backstroke (2:02.68L), 33rd in the 100 Freestyle (1:37.69L) and 20th in the 50 Butterfly (54.73L). Aless placed 25th in the 50 Freestyle (32.86L), 22nd in the 100 Freestyle (1:18.43L), 20th in the 200 Freestyle (2:43.98L), 26th in the 100 Backstroke (1:44.29L), 21st in the 200 Backstroke (1:48.49L) and 23rd in the 200IM (3:26.76L). George placed 38th in the 50 Freestyle (32.02L), 28th in the 100 Freestyle (1:10.08L), 34th In the 200 Freestyle (2:30.39L), 13th in the 100 Butterfly (1:16.80L), 10th in the 200 Butterfly (3:04.53L) and 17th in the 200IM (2:52.38L).

Hannah Makris placed 29th in the 100 Freestyle (1:31.22L), 14th in the 50 Breaststroke (51.92L) and 13th in the 50 Butterfly (46.83L).

Tara Dawley finished 13th in the 50 Freestyle (31.43L), 15th in the 100 Freestyle (1:12.04L), 18th in the 200 Freestyle (2:39.77L), 8th in the 100 Backstroke (1:24.59L), 10th in the 200 Backstroke (3:11.27L) and 15th in the 100 Breaststroke (1:41.21L).

Bianca Solano placed 37th in the 50 Freestyle (35.63L), 25th in the 100 Freestyle (1:20.37L), 30th in the 200 Freestyle (2:59.36L), 12th in the 100 Breaststroke (1:37.69L), 13th in the 200 Breaststroke (3:28.67L) and 20th in the 200 IM (3:14.91L).

Katie Adams finished 24th in the 100 Freestyle (1:19.94L), 25th in the 200 Freestyle (2:54.45L), 18th in the 100 Breaststroke (1:46.29L), 15th in the 200 Breaststroke (3:42.91L), 23rd in the 100 Backstroke (1:36.43L) and 22nd in the 200 IM (3:25.65L).

Adam Harrison finished 14th in the 100 Freestyle (1:17.86L), 5th in the 100 Backstroke (1:33.95L) and 11th in the 50 Breaststroke (49.60L).

Michael Lally placed 20th in the 100 Freestyle (1:30.12L), 13th in the 50 Breaststroke (50.42L) and 7th in the 200 IM (3:36.26L).

Tommy Horan finished 22nd in the 100 Freestyle (1:31.66L), 20th in the 50 Breaststroke (1:00.65L) and 14th in the 50 Butterfly (56.53L).

Adam Hufziger competed in the 50 Breaststroke (NT), placed 26th in the 100 Freestyle (1:39.00L) and 12th in the 100 Backstroke (2:07.92L).

Daniel Hufziger competed in the 100 Butterfly (NT),  placed 16th in the 100 Freestyle (1:06.66L) and 11th in the 200 Backstroke (3:06.40L).

Matt Iassogna finished 22nd in the 50 Freestyle (29.49L), 12th in the 100 Freestyle (1:04.99L), 16th in the 200 Freestyle (2:19.35L) and 100 Backstroke (1:17.65L), 3rd in the 100 Butterfly (1:08.18L) and 7th in the 400 Freestyle (4:55.74L).

Conor Donnelly placed 33rd in the 50 Freestyle (31.18L), 24th in the 100 Freestyle (107.67L), 21st in the 200 Freestyle (2:22.76L), 33rd in the 100 Backstroke (1:31.32L), 12th in the 100 Breaststroke (1:25.09L) and 10th in the 400 Freestyle (5:05.65L).

Abben Hung finished 22nd in the 100 Freestyle (1:07.53L), 20th in the 200 IM (2:56.77L) and 10th in the 100 Breaststroke (1:24.14L).
