Admirals Prepare For State Tourney

Having now completed a highly successful regular season at 20-3 and winning the conference title, the Newtown Admirals Junior American Legion baseball club now awaits its seeding in the state tournament which begins this coming weekend. Recent game recaps:

Admirals complete sweep of DYB 5-2: Kyle Wilcox came on in relief to scatter three hits and the Admirals banged out 12 hits at Rogers Park to complete the double-header sweep of DYB. Alex Amaru had three hits and a RBI and Wilcox had a single and double to lead the attack. Nick Manfreda and Zack Albin had a pair of hits and Chris Tenney had a single and a sac fly to plate a run. Mike Smeriglio had a big RBI single to help pad the lead. Jimmy Dee started the game and held Danbury scoreless on one hit through the early innings.

Admirals hang on and win in extras 6-4: Austin Bonadio and Jon Hull combined to hold a potent Danbury line-up in check, scattering 11 hits and Zack Albin’s ninth inning, two-run blast proved to be the game-winner. Reid Schmidt and Alex Amaru had a pair of singles and Andrew Guercio had a single and double. Hull also had a big RBI single to tie the game early. The Admirals’ pitching was also supported by key defensive plays including a sliding catch by Anthony Maki in right and a diving catch on a liner by Albin at short to strand two Danbury runners in scoring position in the sixth inning.

Admirals win behind Hull: Jon Hull threw a complete game five-hitter, striking out six and allowing no earned runs to lead the Admirals to a 9-3 victory over Naugatuck. Avery Rizzuto had a triple and two singles with three RBIs and Reid Schmidt had three hits and scored two runs to pace the offense. Alex Amaru and Mike Smeriglio had a pair of hits and Jimmy Dee had a single and double. Kyle Wilcox blasted an RBI triple and a long sac fly as well. The Admirals improved 15-3 on the season and clinched a berth in the state tournament.

Admirals top Monroe 10-6: Austin Bonadio’s bases-clearing single drove in three runs to highlight a five-run fourth for the Admirals. John Sorice and two hits and two RBI and Alex Amaru had a big RBI double. Reid Schmidt had a single, double and scored three times. Nick Manfreda had a double and single and scored once. Kyle Wilcox and Chris Tenney added RBI hits as well.

Admirals Dominate Oxford Behind Albin’s two-hitter: Zack Albin tossed a complete game two-hitter, striking out 12, and the Admirals capitalized on some timely hitting and Oxford miscues to win 5-0. Kyle Wilcox had a run-scoring triple and Avery Rizzuto and Andrew Guercio also had hits. The Admirals’ defense was rock solid, playing errorless ball. Centerfielder Austin Bonadio cut down a runner trying to reach third to stop an early Oxford rally and stellar plays by Mike Smeriglio, John Sorice, and Jon Hull backed Albin’s pitching.
