Lona Walrath

Former Brookfield Teacher

Lona Walrath, 90, of Newtown, formerly of Brookfield, died July 16, at Danbury Hospital. Mrs Walrath was born May 22, 1920, in Troy, N.Y., the daughter of Anna B. (Kline) and William M. Powell.

She was the wife of the late Merrill “Mike” Walrath, former Brookfield first selectman.

Mrs Walrath worked in the Brookfield public schools as a librarian and a language arts teacher. The Walraths retired to Boynton Beach, Fla., and Mrs Walrath returned to Connecticut seven years ago to reside in Newtown, in order to be near her family.

She is survived by her two sons, Peter Walrath, and his wife Patricia, of Brookfield and James Walrath of Flemington, N.Y.; a son-in-law, Tom Roberts of Rochester, N.Y.; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her daughter, Nancy Roberts.

Funeral arrangements will be private.
