Police At Checkpoint Issue Citations To Motorists
Although the nine police who worked at a sobriety checkpoint on July 16/17 did not find any drunken drivers traveling on a section of South Main Street near Borough Lane, the law enforcement project did uncover a number of moving violations for which police issued citations.
Police staffed the checkpoint from 7 pm on Friday, July 16, to 3 am on Saturday, July 17, in seeking to get intoxicated motorists off the road.
Eight police officers and one supervisor participated in the checkpoint through which approximately 1,000 drivers traveled, police said.
During the checkpoint, police stopped both lanes of traffic to briefly interview drivers on whether they had been drinking alcohol or consuming drugs before driving.
Police said that during very heavy traffic, they suspended the checkpoint to alleviate traffic congestion.
During the enforcement project, police issued ten infractions to motorists. They include: seven cases of driving an unregistered vehicle, two instances of failure to carry a vehicle registration, and one case of failure to wear a seatbelt.
Police report that they also issued one written warning and 59 verbal warnings for miscellaneous motor vehicle violations.
