Knights Win District Title, Keep Going In States

The Newtown Knights captured the Cal Ripken 9-Year-Old Division District Championship on July 12 and continued to advance deep into state tournament play this week.

In the district tournament, the Knights cruised into the championship round with an undefeated tourney record and two chances to win the title. The Knights lost to Southbury 3-1, forcing a second and deciding game on the same day. The Knights left nothing in doubt by breaking it open early with an impressive offensive onslaught to defeat Southbury 15-4. The Knights are comprised of solid pitching and defense, which has carried them throughout the Tournament.

Throughout the district tourney the Knights received great pitching from Matt Gerics, Jamie Cochrane and Jack Moulder. They were led offensively by Chris Blanco, Patrick Conte, Bob Haskins, Justin Dunn and Gerics. The Knights are managed by Lou Blanco.

Making A Statement

The Knights began state play with a 10-1 win over West Norwalk behind strong pitching outings from Matt Gerics and Jack Moulder this past Saturday. The Knights scored times in the first inning and accumulated 12 hits throughout the game. They continued their winning ways by defeating Danbury on Sunday 4-3 in a nail-biter. Danbury was ahead 3-1 going into the bottom of the fifth when Newtown rallied. Dave Gerics started the inning with a single up the middle. Chris Blanco doubled to left, Bob Haskins doubled and Jack Moulder produced a run-scoring single.

The two undefeated state tourney teams, Newtown and Bethel, went head-to-head on Tuesday night in Bethel for the right to advance to the state championship game.

The Knights beat Bethel 16-12 to advance to the championship game scheduled for Thursday night in Bethel (after The Bee went to press). In the win over Bethel, Newtown was led by Gerics and Conte, each of whom went 4-for-5. Blanco was 2-for-4 and Matt Davis was 1-for-2 with a clutch triple. Going into the bottom of the third, the Knights were up 11-1, but Bethel battled back to score five runs to make things interesting. It rained lightly for the first four innings, making routine plays a challenge for both 9 year old teams. In the end, Newtown’s big bats got the job done and Moulder again settled things down for the Knights from the hill.
